The Story of 1848 House

Think about it. Here is a house lived in by Puritan descendants for well over 100 years. The fifth of only five owners, Lois and Johnny are the first non-English interlopers. From these quaint rooms, an AP photographer modems his images of visiting President Clinton to the home office. A guest checks her laptop for the latest stock market quotes.

Actually it was John H. Youngs, who at age of 22, built the house in 1848 for his new bride, Elizabeth. They filled the house with eight children. John was a blacksmith and operated a shop at the corner of Accabonac and Pantigo Roads. He also founded the lovely Methodist Church just up the road.

Some history books refer to the house as the Youngs House, but it was the Stratton family who dominated the house for close to 75 years. Miss Ruth G. Stratton and her sister, Mrs. Marcia Crowne, inherited the property from their grandfather in 1894. The sisters lived in the house into the 1960s, we think renting rooms. We feel privileged to be the present owners of such a historic house.
