Favorite Readings

Let's begin with the one must-read about East Hampton:Steven Gaines' Philistines at the Hedgerow, a gossipy overview of Hamptons' society past and present that is simply outrageous and most entertaining.

P.D. James mysteries are great summer treats

Rebecca Wells' Ya-Ya Sisterhood novels are favorites with guests

Simon Winchester, The Professor and the Madman, is recommended by Lois

Sebastian Junger, The Perfect Storm, could be considered must reading when you're at the ocean

E. Annie Proulx, The Shipping News, has been popular with some

Wally Lamb novels show up a lot but they're heavy psychological reads

The East Hampton Library (631) 324-0222 is worth a visit just to see the lovely building, interiors, and courtyard. They have a great children's library, computers, a magazine room, and a good local history cabinet, and possibly you can get a summer checkout card.

There's a fine if the librarian finds sand in your returned books!

The Amagansett Free Library (631) 267-3810 is a most charming village library where the librarians are well read and very friendly. You should be able to get a summer card there.

The East Hampton Starand Dan's Newspaperscarry local news and lists of events for each week, from birdwatching forays to charity balls.

Book Hampton (631) 324-4939, on East Hampton's Main Street, is jammed in the evenings. Well stocked and friendly, the store features author readings in the early evening.
